Book Blurb:

The year 1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell’s prophetic, nightmarish vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. 1984 is still the great modern classic of “negative utopia” -a startlingly original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing, from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions -a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

My Review:

This is an excellent book for the current political climate. Reading this would make you think as to what do overt patriotism, nationalism is ok and how much is over the board. It also makes you question the power of the press in inciting opinions from the masses. All in all, George Orwell is the genius who saw what was going to happen, and it is becoming a reality to an extent.

The writing is brilliant and poignant, just like his Animal Farm. Here he coins these iconic lines:

Image result for war is peace

This is a truly profound book, it makes you question your beliefs. The characterization is quite brilliant. In the book, everything that a citizen does is controlled by the ruling government. There is also a concept of “Thought Police”, and I really could see the parallels of such organisations today. There are many fringe groups that feel they have a right to police what the other people can or cannot do, eat, watch or read as some or other “sentiments” or “feelings” get hurt. We, as a society, are going away from progress, unity, acceptance, peace and are actually going towards this world. We have actually reached the “ignorance is strength” part, now we are just aiming for the other two, and honestly, the time is not far for us to achieve this as well.

So, we see Winston Smith whose job is to rewrite the history according to the whims and the fancies of the Government that believe that in order to maintain peace in the country, it is better to let people believe we are at war with other countries.

If you enjoy political satires, this is definitely the book for you. I rate this book a perfect 4 out of 4 stars.
