Why did so many shows get the axe? I mean is not this country were its normal for tv serials to go up to 6 -7 years? What happened? What changed?
What is happening in the TVland is what happened to the machineland in 1990’s.
You see, before 1990’s all the people in machineland were happy, whatever they made the customers had to buy! But, post the economic reforms, foreigners came up, competition increased, the consumer now had a choice! So she obviously choose the better one.
And in order to survive, the people in the machineland, had to get up and give her what she wanted or die trying!
Now, back to the tellyland, when we were growing up, there were precious little foreign content on tv. Except an occasional Small Wonder, I Dream of Genie, F.R.I.E.N.D.S and few others, there was nothing! So the consumer had to be contended with the endless fights between the Saas and the Bahu on every channel!
But, with the advent of channels like Star World, Zee Cafe, AXN, which brought us serials with real story line which did not drag up to infinity, the TRPs of the same old content got dumped!
Also, our serials have a habit of getting fixated to one thing and forgetting the purpose of the show!
I’ll give you two examples:
Excellent start, fantastic story line! But now if you see there is no vadhu who is a balika anymore! Still the serial drags on and on.
Other example is sanjivni. Remember the serial of the doctors? Again an excellent start, but then in long run, it became a regular love triangle story where these doctors never even went to the hospital. And in those rare cases the hospital was shown it was only to show another aspect of the ‘love’
Compare this with another serial of doctors. “Grey’s Anatomy“. It is full of emotional drama, broken friendships, failed marriages, extra marital affairs, you name it, it has it. But in the 9 seasons that have come, not one episode has gone without showing at least 3 surgeries.
It’s the life of the doctors people. Doctors are supposed to save people’s lives and not run around trees singing and dancing!
